So I created a forum to provide an accessible space to share knowledge, experiences, and support each other in our gravity mountain biking endeavors. Think of this as a PinkBike or Vital MTB for the Womens Freeride Movement... Check it out here!!!

Please understand this is a work in progress, and it will take a little time to get the forum running efficiently and effectively. For now this is what the forum will provide:

Events - meet and talk to others who are going, find transportation, ask questions, discuss experiences
Locations - find riders in your area and learn of new places to ride
Ask a Fellow Freerider - a place to reach out to other female riders for advice and tips on gear, bike skills, etc.
Classifieds - buy or sell used gear

Sea Otter Classic Experience

The first bike race I ever did was at Sea Otter in 2010. It was the excitement of that first race that began my addiction to bike racing, but it was the Sea Otter – a celebration of almost every form of biking, complete with international top pro’s in every discipline battling it out - that I found so unique. All of this happening at one place at one time. Amazing! This year, my third year racing the Sea Otter, was probably my most rewarding. I had upgraded to Pro class over the winter and in doing so, had made serious bike related goals for myself. So, while the snowboards collected dust – my free time was spent on the trainer, in the gym, driving to lower elevations to ride, and reading Mastering Mountain Bike Skills from cover to cover. My goal for Sea Otter 2012 was to simply be able to hang in the stacked pack of pro women in DS and DH – and that I did. There is nothing better than the feeling of progressing in a sport and to know that you’ve accomplished something that just a few years ago seemed so far out of reach. Sea Otter has been a documentation of my progression in cycling and a racing reunion of sorts – where far away friends come together. That’s why I love it. And where else could I have been in the gate with Danny Hart for my DS qualifying run? Almost had him ( :

SC Bike Fest:: Together we shine!

Being tied up with academic endeavors, I was only able to make it to one day of the Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival. I chose to come Saturday, because I was invited by Kat Sweet to come help her and Tammy Donahugh with their Pumptrack and Mountain Bike Skills Clinics. I also was happy to see many friends start the Bell Super Enduro race, which Mary won! She also raced the short track and pumptrack races and you can read more about her experience here. Many ladies competed and that made me super happy.

It had rained terribly the week before and Kat and Tammy only had a small area to work with, but along with Courtney Knudsen's help, the clinics went off without a hitch and smiles were surely infectious. Over the course of two hours, students learned proper body positioning, braking, cornering, and skills specific to the pumptrack or the trail.

It was brilliant to see so many ability levels come together and improvements and epiphany moments being obtained by all.

The mountain bike festival itself was bigger than ever and evidence of all the hard work and planning that went into creating the event was seen everywhere. Having been on the road for a few months and missing my Santa Cruz and California riding friends, the festival was a great place to run into friends and briefly catch up. Journalist Joh Rathbun was on the scene and even hit the Camp of Champions air bag!

I even got to see Michele Lamelin for 2 seconds :)

The next time I will see Kat and Tammy will be for Dixie Trix in Grand Junction, CO at the Ranchstyle Bike Festival. I'm really excited to see what we all have in store for ourselves this season...

We are less than two weeks away from Dixie Trix, a women's only mtb clinic and slopestyle contest hosted by Tammy Donahugh in Grand Junction, CO at the Ranchstyle Mountain Bike Festival.

Tammy will be joined by several other coaches and pro female riders, including Lindsey Voreis who will host a Skills Ride on Saturday (in addition to the womens clinic). The slopestyle course is being specially built for this event, and should provide a great opportunity for progression and fun!

Shine SendHer 2012

In the continuing effort to progress women's gravity mountain biking to the next level, Shine presents the first women's only big mountain freeride competition; Shine SendHer! SendHer will take place at the old Rampage venue in Virgin, Utah the weekend before Interbike (September 15 &16). Competitors will have the option to utilize existing lines or build their own. Several photographers and filmers will be on location to capture the action. This is a serious contest, for advanced riders only. All (boys and girls) are welcomed and encouraged to come hangout, help build, camp, spectate and ride at their own risk. However, the contest is open to qualified riders only to reduce the risk of serious injuries.

Jackie Harmony has been accepted as our first qualified competitor for SendHer 2012. For those of you who don't know Jackie, she is a professional downhill mountain bike competitor from Sedona, AZ. Jackie is fun and fearless and we are excited to see what she plans to throw down in September. In the meantime, check out Jackie's qualifying video:

Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival - WTB All-Mounatin challenge

This past weekend was the Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival in Aptos, CA. I took part in the WTB All-Mounatin challenge, 3 racing events in 2 days, which included the Bell Super-Enduro, the Epicenter Cycling Pumptrack pandemonium and the Specialized/Scotts Valley Cycle Sport Short Track race.
On saturday was the Super-Enduro, the first legally sanctioned race at Soquel Demonstration State Forest: 3 timed DH with 3 transition climbs. Only 50 racers had the chance to start as the Forestry dpt limited the field. The field was stacked with amazing riders from DH World Cup racers, International Enduro specialist to local shredder...

Fontana Nationals and Keyesville Classic

I’ve been racing the last two weekends after a couple of weeks of hiatus. The first weekend of racing was Fontana Nationals. I raced in both Super-D and DH, respectively with my Leprechaun and Bucephalus (aka V10c – I need to do a full post on it as I’ve finished to build my wheels for it – plus it’s only 33lbs and deserves some attention).
Super-D consisted in 2 runs: long course first and short course last. I felt really good on the long course even though I dabbed a little at the start and it took me 30 seconds to get my flow on. It was a whole different story on the short course: sandier course, I didn’t get my groove on that course and you can actually see it on the timing: I was just 1 seconds off Joanna on the first course but 14 seconds off on the 2nd course which was shorter... click to read more

Canadian mountain biker Anka shares her story about finding mountain biking and the inception of Dirty Jane, THE online retail location for females action sports needs...

SHINE: What got you into mountain biking?

DIRTYJANE: I (Anka) moved from east coast to west coast after university and found myself living on the edge of the North Shore Mountains in North Vancouver, British Columbia. I kept seeing women all geared up and riding big beefy bikes. I had never seen anything like it before and I wanted in. I joined a women’s local group ride for beginners and never looked back. Now every weekend trip I take involves best buddies and bikes!

SHINE: What IS Dirty Jane?

DIRTYJANE: Dirty Jane is THE online retailer for girls in action sports looking for gear and apparel specifically for them! We outfit from head to toe and from soft goods to hard goods - lots of great brands and all in one place. We are focusing our efforts on building out the product mix for mountain biking – that is our favorite sport and what we are personally most passionate about. Plus our industry connections are deepest in cycling so it was a no-brainer to start there. In the near future though we do intend to build out several other action sports (Moto, Kitesurfing, Paddle sports, you name it … we are excited about what is to come next!)

Dirty Jane’s products are currently available to the USA only and we hope to grow into other countries in the future. Moe, my husband and dirty-jane.com co-founder is American and a Canadian Permanent Resident. I am Canadian and will be soon applying for my green card so I can work in the USA. We both currently live in Squamish, BC the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada.

SHINE: Where did you get the idea to open an online store?

DIRTYJANE: I was standing in a line up for the gondola at the Whistler Mountain Bike Park on a sunny and very busy weekend. There were almost as many women in line as there were men! You could easily see that most women where wearing the exact same gear – not a ton of options out there in gear for girls. I started to ask women about it and I heard over and over how frustrated they felt walking into a store to see, almost as an afterthought, one little rack of women’s gear in a sea of men’s products. I, like most other girls out there, want to look good when I ride. So Dirty Jane was born.

As we researched we found out that there are many companies out there who are making plans to step it up and either grow their women’s line or create a new women’s line for those that don’t have them yet. Yah!! We don’t need to compete … we need to help get the products to women. This was also an opportunity to use the Dirty Jane brand to help support women in the sport, making it more visible and encouraging others to get involved. I want to see more chicks do rad stuff – it is inspiring.

An online store also offers way more flexibility in where I am physically located as we have the opportunity to partner with our vendors and costumers from any location. The vendors handle warehousing and shipping, so we don’t have to. It offers us the opportunity to travel, bike, stay at a campground, etc. So long as there is an Internet connection and I have my laptop I can “open shop” and work. If you want greater freedom and flexibility in your life you have to go out and create it for yourself.

SHINE: How did you get along before you started this rad store for extreme ladies? (career wise and acquiring apparel/equipment for your sports)

DIRTYJANE: Anka has a background in urban planning, community development and health and wellness. Being a multi-sport outdoor enthusiast, building the Dirty Jane shop just made sense.

Moe is a retired professional mountain biker with awesome sponsors and deep connections in the industry, as well as years of sports marketing and sales experience. Moe loves bikes, motos, cars … basically anything that goes fast!

SHINE: How did you start it?

DIRTYJANE: We talked to as many people as possible about the idea – men, women, mountain bikers, non-mountain bikers, online business guru’s … we learned as much as we could about what was possible and how to grow this business. We practiced (and still do) dreaming BIG!! We sit often with markers and large flipchart paper and brainstorm the big dreams and then map out what we need to do to get there (today, next week and next month). We both work full time jobs and building Dirty Jane alongside our other work, yet still we manage to squeeze rides in as often as we can!

SHINE: Any advice for other female entrepreneurs?

DIRTYJANE: Know your why. Any business is made up of a million little tasks that fill your day that may not seem very appealing. The big picture (heck even the middle picture) is SUPER COOL and it keeps me excited about what I am doing. When I get to spend my day at a bike show meeting new people in the industry or travel to a new destination and work on the road I am reminded of why I chose to do this. I made an awesome decision when I decided to start Dirty Jane. I am so excited to see where we take this.

Reaper Madness DH & SuperD @Bootleg Canyon

Hosted by Downhill Mike, the 2012 Reaper Madness Downhill and SuperD races took place this past President's Day Weekend in Bootleg Canyon Mountain Bike Park in Boulder City, Nevada. A USA Cycling sanctioned event, competitors could receive USAC points to qualify for Nationals and pros had a chance at winning part of a purse totaling at $2000 between the two events. With free camping and non-stop shuttling all weekend, competitors and spectators alike were having great times. Thanks Mike and a HUGE thanks to the guys at All Mountain Cyclery for all of their help!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Kirstie Douglass really loves her V-10. She also loves the Auburn Canyon. Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. So today we decided to make a quick video to express her everlasting love. It wasn’t easy. So many things went wrong in so little time; a flat tire on the car, messed up brakes, a slow leak on the V-10, many dangerous high-speed bicycle/dog interactions, a locked gate at mammoth bar, non-stop laughter, limited sunlight, and of course the goPRO battery was dead so we had to use the not-so-HD Flip camera.... But then there was a rainbow! In fact there was a double rainbow when we were driving up the canyon, but I would have killed us if I tried to film it. We are definitely not professional filmers or editors, but its not like we are submitting this to the Sundance Film Festival. Hope you enjoy this and look forward to more short films to come!

Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival 2012

Last years event was an amazing success. The local advocacy group, Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz, were able to raise over $10,000 for the future build of a new bike park in Aptos, CA. So mark your calendars for the weekend before Sea Otter, April 14th and 15th 2012. The 2012 Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival is sure to be bigger and better this year. And there will definitely be some women's specific events!!

Raceface Women's Apparel & the Art of Emily Miles

For a while I had thought that Raceface was long gone... But while I was attending Interbike back in September, I had the great opportunity of meeting with Wendy, the Softgoods Marketing and Design Manager. She took the time to run me through the new line of women's apparel. From what I saw I have a strong intuition that green is going to be the new purple in 2012 :). I was really stoked on the full Khyber set up. The shorts are tough and durable, with a nice texture. The knee protection is specifically designed to fit women, so forget about having knee pads around your ankles while flying through the air. Additionally the pads open from the back and can be easily put on or removed without taking off your kicks. Whats not to love?

Another exciting addition to the the line are jerseys and gloves adorned with the art of Emily Miles. Emily currently lives in Vancouver. She studied at the Visual Arts, illustration workshops at ECUAD and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, and the children’s book workshop with Michael Katz at UBC. I think its wonderful that Raceface is supporting one of their local female artists, and the goods look great!

CCCX Enduro/SuperD Race #1 RESULTS

The fun, local CCCX DH race series sponsored by X-Fusion has recently been re-named as an "Enduro/SuperD." Because of the infamous pedally sections of the courses used in Toro Park, the label seems a bit more appropriate. But don't be fooled, there are still some ripping sections and sweet jumps. Big ups to the great turn-out of women and congrats to Kelsey Anderson for killing it in the Pro category.

Hammer Update!! Mary wraps up an amazing season and plans for 2012...

I've been laying low for the past month and getting ready for next season: diet, more hill climbing (trying to average 2000ft a ride with 6 rides a week) and mixing different riding disciplines for the winter: road, BMX, CX, trail/AM on the hardtail and some shuttles with the Nomad.

I've been focusing more and more on XC riding and hillclimbs as it's one of my weakness and in order to get my butt up that mountain faster, I need to loose weight - vicious circle. The reason also for all this hillclimbing and XC is because UCI will be putting Enduro into their World Cup calendar in 2013 and I've decided to refocus myself on this. I love DH but I'm not that young and carefree and my body has been taking a beat-up the last 2 years. I'll still keep dong DH but Enduro is more were my heart tends to go: longer DH with some pedaling as well.

In addition to 5 DH World Cups (Val Di Sol, Fort Williams, Mt Ste Anne, Whindham and Val d'Isère - I can't miss this last one, it's on my Bday!), I'll be doing the Oregon Super-D series next year as well as as much Enduro as possible in Northern America to be ready for 2013.

2011 was an amazing year for me: first year as a Pro, first year on a real DH bike and even got UCI points to race World Cups - I've learned so much and I'm so greatfull to my friends (my BF Peter, Lindsay, Tristan, Megan, Chris R, Beth and Rosie) to have filled me with positive energy to keep going and pushing my limits. And a big Thanks to my sponsors as well, without which I wouldn't have been able to ride.
